What Is a Public IP Address?

Your public IP address is the unique numerical identifier assigned to your home router or mobile device by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). It enables web servers, streaming platforms, and game hosts to route requested data packets back to your physical connection.

IPv4 vs. IPv6 Addresses

IPv4: 32-bit numerical address formatted as four decimal octets (e.g. 202.62.63.101). Because the global pool of 4.3 billion IPv4 addresses is fully allocated, ISPs increasingly use Carrier-Grade NAT (CGNAT) to share IPv4 addresses among multiple households.

IPv6: 128-bit hexadecimal address formatted as eight groups of four hexadecimal digits (e.g. 2606:4700:4700::1111). IPv6 provides virtually limitless addresses, eliminates the need for NAT translation, and enables direct point-to-point communication with lower routing overhead.
