Understanding IP Addresses, ASN & Global BGP Routing
Every connected device, web server, and cloud service communicates across the global internet using public IP addresses routed through Autonomous Systems.
IPv4 vs. IPv6 Addressing
IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses (e.g. 198.51.100.1), yielding 4.3 billion possible combinations. Because this address pool is exhausted, modern carriers deploy Carrier-Grade NAT (CGNAT) and transition to IPv6 (128-bit hexadecimal addresses like 2606:4700::1111) for end-to-end direct routing.
Autonomous System Numbers (ASN) & BGP Routing
An Autonomous System (AS) is an independent network of IP prefixes managed by a single administrative organization (such as Comcast, Cloudflare, or Deutsche Telekom). Each AS is assigned a unique globally registered ASN (e.g. AS13335 for Cloudflare, AS15169 for Google). Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) manages how data packets hop between these autonomous networks.
Reverse DNS (PTR Records)
A reverse DNS pointer (PTR record) maps an IP address back to its associated fully qualified domain name (FQDN). Legitimate email servers and enterprise web hosts rely on reverse DNS verification to prevent spam and detect spoofed IP routing.
How Geolocation Accuracy Works
- Country Level (99%+ Accuracy): Formally allocated by Regional Internet Registries (ARIN, RIPE, APNIC).
- City / Metro Level (75%–85% Accuracy): Reflects the location of your ISP's regional aggregation gateway (CMTS or POP).
- Street Address (Not Possible): Public IP addresses do not disclose personal street addresses or names.
Frequently Asked Questions About IP & Domain Lookups
Why does my IP lookup show a different city from where I live?
Internet Service Providers route traffic through central regional data centers or Point of Presence (POP) facilities. GeoIP databases map the IP block to the ISP's regional routing center rather than individual customer homes.
What is Carrier-Grade NAT (CGNAT)?
Because IPv4 addresses are scarce, many ISPs use CGNAT to assign a shared public IP address to hundreds of different households simultaneously.
