How Download Times Are Calculated
The time required to download a file depends on three variables: the raw file size, the available downstream bandwidth, and network protocol transmission efficiency. The mathematical formula is:
Duration (seconds) = (File Size in Megabytes × 8) ÷ (Download Speed in Mbps × Protocol Efficiency)
Estimated Download Durations Across Common Line Speeds
- 10 GB Video Game Update:
- At 25 Mbps: ~56 minutes
- At 100 Mbps: ~14 minutes
- At 500 Mbps: ~2.8 minutes
- At 1,000 Mbps (Gigabit Fiber): ~1.4 minutes
- 50 GB AAA Game Installation:
- At 50 Mbps: ~2.3 hours
- At 200 Mbps: ~35 minutes
- At 1,000 Mbps: ~7 minutes
