Bandwidth & File Transfer Calculators

Accurately estimate file transfer durations and monthly data cap usage across any connection speed.

Bandwidth Mathematics: Bits vs. Bytes

One of the most common points of confusion in networking is the difference between Megabits per second (Mbps) and Megabytes per second (MB/s):

  • 1 Byte = 8 bits.
  • Internet connection speeds are advertised by ISPs in Megabits per second (Mbps).
  • File sizes on disk (games, operating system images, 4K videos) are measured in Megabytes (MB) or Gigabytes (GB).
  • To find your theoretical maximum download transfer rate in Megabytes per second, divide your connection speed in Mbps by 8. For example, a 100 Mbps connection transfers files at approximately 12.5 MB/s.

Accounting for Network Protocol Overhead

In real-world transfers, approximately 5% to 10% of total bandwidth is consumed by TCP/IP packet headers, TLS/SSL cryptographic handshakes, and packet acknowledgments (ACKs). A 100 Mbps connection realistically yields approximately 11.5 MB/s of net payload throughput.
